A SQL lakehouse platform brings together the best of both the data warehouse and the data lake, and removes the limitations of traditional data warehouses and closed data architectures.
In this virtual roundtable session with our peers, we discussed how this is achievable and get answers to the following questions:
- Why do you need a SQL lakehouse?
- Can it meet your latency and throughput requirements?
- Will it improve the efficiency of overburdened data engineers?
- Does it support data portability with open APIs, data formats, and source code?
- Perhaps most importantly, can enterprise teams govern data consumption on the SQL lakehouse?
Here is what we learned:
- When working with vendors, ask what do you need and how fast do you need access to it, and for what purpose. If you can get access to it quickly and formatted without a datalake, then is a datalake really needed?
- Right now they’re using a data warehouse, with BI layered on top of it.
- The alure of snowflake is the ease of use, but the more you are dependent on it, the cost can go up 10-fold and you have to explain the cost-value now.
