Bridging the Gap in Sustainable Finance in Asia and the Pacific: Principles for Action

With current financial requirements far exceeding available resources, the Asia-Pacific region is not on track to meet the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, nor to achieve its climate ambitions. It is time for all stakeholders – in particular Governments, regulators, and private financial entities – to accelerate change by committing themselves to achieving net-zero emissions and transforming their financing priorities, processes, and programs to meet the growing financing needs of the region.

By focusing on sustainable finance, which refers broadly to both the financing of sustainable activities and financial resources that are sustainably managed, ESCAP, in its latest report “Sustainable Finance: Bridging the Gap in Asia and the Pacific” highlights the challenges and opportunities available to Governments, regulators and private financial entities in the Asia-Pacific region to bridge the gap in sustainable finance. To facilitate the implementation of policies and actions, the report proposes 10 principles to propel the use of financial resources for climate action. These 10 principles are categorized into actions to be taken by Governments, regulators, and private financial entities.

In this introduction, we proudly presented our solution partners who empower corporate entities and policymakers across various areas, from strategy formulation to practical implementation. Savored a delicious lunch presented by our Hospitality Partner, Conrad Bali. The hotel implements responsible sourcing to procure sustainable ingredients, supporting wildlife conservation efforts and farm-to-table practices by working with local organic farms and fishermen to supply 90% of their fresh products and seafood supply.

3 Key Applications for Decarbonisation using AI/ML

Energy demand management, supply chain optimization, and sustainable materials and manufacturing are 3 areas where companies are accelerating decarbonization using AI/ML. We discussed these and other use cases for the predictive power of AI.

During this session, we recognized and celebrated local organizations in Bali that are leading the way towards sustainability, and presented the winner with the Green Impact Award. A portion of each summit sponsorship fee was invested directly into the winning program.

Building an Ethical Supply Chain

Climate change and its effects are already disrupting global supply chains, putting more people in vulnerable situations. Modern slavery exists in the US, Australia, and all over the world; multinationals with extended supply chains are being forced to eliminate the mistreatment of workers upstream of their businesses or risk their reputation and access to capital.

A Data-Driven Approach to Net Zero

We discussed the data we’ll need to collect and the metrics we’ll want to focus on as we address Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions (particularly Scope 3) under the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. Why are companies required to collect this data?

Avoiding the Greenwashing Trap

Communicating your ESG initiatives to your customers and community can backfire and be labeled greenwashing. Organisations must ensure their communications are genuine and transparent so as not to undermine their or their industry’s efforts on ESG. Companies that don’t build accessibility and tangibility into their ESG communications will likely be perceived as greenwashing.

In this workshop, we explored how to avoid the greenwashing trap.

We enjoyed a proper send-off after 2 days of sustainability-driven conversation, insights, and activities.
